HUNDREDS GATHER TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MAKO IWAMATSU IN CAGES!
11/14/07
Hundreds flocked to downtown Los Angele’s Little Tokyo Aratani Theatre on Saturday, November 10th to attend the first ever public screening in the USA of CAGES in honor of the late Asian American pioneering actor, Mako.
In addition to being in CAGES, Mako's 50-year career included a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award & Golden Globe nomination for THE SAND PEBBLES (1966) and a Tony Award nomination for his Broadway debut in PACIFIC OVERTURES (1976).
As a founding member of East West Players, he served as Artistic Director for 24 years.
The one-time event was presented by Perles Entertainment in association with the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center and East West Players.
Cages marked Mako’s last leading role in a feature film. The event attracted the likes of Hollywood celebrities, local political figures, and dedicated Mako fans within the Japanese American community to pay tribute to Mako’s last leg of work.
During a Q&A session following the screening, Director Graham Streeter announced that Director of Photography Mark Lapwood received a Bronze Award in the Feature Film Cinema category for CAGES at the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) New South Wales (NSW) 2007.
Cages, distributed by Perles Entertainment, is the first of many films the distribution company plans to slowly unvail, making up a collection of socially responsible and heartwarming international films for 2008.

ABOUT CAGES-THE FILM: Shot entirely in Singapore, Cages is a heartwarming story about a single mother (Life! Theater Awards Best Actress Tan Kheng Hua) who comes face-to-face with her estranged father (Japanese-American Oscar nominee Mako Iwamatsu) after 20 years of silence. Finding common ground in her blind son (played by visually-impaired Singaporean actor Dickson Tan), the two learn to forgive each other for the sins of their past.
REVIEWS: The film has garnered glowing reviews from the International press. Tan’s and Mako’s performances have been lauded as “moving”, “powerful” and “convincing”. The film’s solid production values have also caught the attention of critics and audiences alike. Trade publication Variety writes: “Singapore may never have looked better… Lensing by Mark Lapwood is astoundingly good.”
DISTRIBUTION: Perles Entertainment Group Acquired Streeter's recent feature film CAGES for international distribution in July 2007. Joaquin Perles, founder of Perles Entertainment explains "This is the type of cinematic beauty and sumptuous storyline that Europeans are attracted to, and the territories we are focused on selling to are perfect for this type of film". Perles adds "The quality of production found in Cages and the universal appeal of the story Streeter has written gives us Perles Films confidence that our cinema goers throughout Europe will enjoy the picture greatly.
DIRECTOR GRAHAM STREETER: "Written and Directed by American Graham Streeter, this made-in-Singapore film CAGES is the first film in Asia to have its TV rights purchased by the Hallmark Channel. The picturesque film has already been seen by over 20 million viewers in 24 Asian countries. Streeter's next feature film “NORMAL FOLK” www.normalfolk.com
is already gaining momentum as he plans for preproduction for early Spring 2008.
