In September of 1997, I quit my network TV job, and started on my own. I vowed to direct artistic yet marketable film projects that would cinematically explore cultural diversity while reaffirming universal humanity: all this, done in a cinematic style that would serve valuable on a multi-national level. It was a huge challenge, but I finally found what I was looking for during a trip to Singapore. Upon my visit, I must admit, I didn't know what to expect. So little information had been provided to me both through my education and the general media. This was my first indicator of a great opportunity to create a quintessential Singapore story with an international appeal.

What resulted was an intimate story called CAGES that captured the beauty and unique colors of Singapore's culture and fabric thread, while providing a compelling human drama that would create an understanding that although we are from different backgrounds and cultures, we are all human.
