Asrani finishes Cages 09/23/04

For those of you who didn't get time to really hang out with Asrani....sorry. He is such an incredibly amazing man.

I must admit, even I didn't have time to spend with him while we were shooting. I remember Tania, the producer, asking me if there were any areas we could increase his role in the script. I made a few adjustments, but held firm that the story was not about him; that LEO was only a supporting role to move the story forward. I did adjust his role completely after finally confirming his participation.

But every day, when I worked with this gentleman on set, I realized he had so much more to offer to a film than the simple role of LEO. He is definitely leading man material. He has a memory that is so sharp. You tell him once, and he never forgets a detail. He is a dream for blocking....and he's so patient.

After the filming was over, I finally was able to spend and evening with him. I could have stayed up all night talking. I felt I had oversighted a great talent. I felt I had cast a giant in a small meaningless role.

But I know I didn't. LEO was a powerfully small role. His presence, I have always contested, is minor, but very important in Cages. I consider it an extended cameo. It is a gift to have his participation. It was an honor to have is interpretation of LEO.

I look forward to going to India after the film is done to see him work there. I hope we can work together again. Maybe next time in India. He came and went so quickly. Next time, he will be the first on set...and the last to go. I will work with him agian! I promise.
