Talk, Talk, Talk!
07/01/04
I’m pretty much sick of hearing myself lately, but I guess I’m not the only one talking. There’s a great feeling when you walk past a room in the production office and a group of people are having a deep and detailed conversation about some facet of CAGES. All this great energy focused on making the story as authentic, beautiful, and compelling as possible is so exciting and surreal.
I spent a good portion of the day with leading actress Tan Kheng Hua who will be carrying the story. We discussed and analyzed details of her character’s past, from childhood up to the story taking place. Back-story is a critical foundation in which an emotional journey like CAGES is based. Her drive to understand and clearly define the answers to this character’s past is a great comfort to me.
She’s a very crafted actress and I know that all she needs to move forward in the story is answers to her character’s past. Creating a real person, who has made choices…be it unwise and irrational, still they are choices. The human condition is full of inconsistencies, but our intentions and fundamental needs are universal. This is more than apparent when we deconstruct ALI and find her inner soul. Kheng Hua is no veteran to theatre, and homework on a character as complex as the one she will play in CAGES takes full concentration. I’m sure this is just the beginning of on-going dialogue as we close in on shooting date. By the time we get to set, I have no doubt she will know ALI more than I. I have no doubt Kheng Hua will delight me with a living person.
Meanwhile, a meeting to discuss covering the production from a documentary perspective brought one representative from all departments together to strategize what would be covered by still photography. A pool of 8 still photographers will rotate daily on set, archiving both within the scenes behind the scenes as every day unfolds. In fact, the photos you see on this site are all from those same people, with the exception of the earliest photos, which were taken by anyone and everyone kind enough to have taken a photo.
Samantha (Art Director) took some extra time to run through with two key photographers her strategy for both wardrobe and environment. With a clear understanding of our approaches to color, design, story telling, actor rehearsals and every other facet of the CAGES film production, the photographers can hopefully flag and identify what is important when capturing the days.
For now, there are no sets, there are no characters, there are no lights, no props, and no crew. It’s just a lot of people huddled in various rooms, sorting through photographs, and scribbling on scripts and drawing rough sketches. Sometimes I’m doing a lot of the talking, other times, it’s others talking about what I’ve been talking about. But no matter how you slice it, the bulk of today felt like a whole bunch of talk, talk, talk!
