Shooting night for day
09/13/04
I must admit, I am always amazed at the beautiful results of shooting a day scene at night. Most Directors of Photography would say no way, but Mark Lapwood has made a difficult challenge in scheduling look like a piece of art.
Shooting at Club Street is over, but I neglected to write about how convincing Mark's lighting talents utilized our choice to shoot in this high traffic location at night.
The traffic was a worry coming into this location. I had made a huge fuss about insisting we shoot at this location because the building that became the bird shop was in fact the actual building I found four years ago and modelled my imaginary bird shop after. There is no one moment that there aren't cars bumper to bumper on that little street. I think it's a local's secret short cut to avoid long traffic lights in the Chinatown area. Hass, our trusty Production Manager had the brains to schedule the shooting there at night. We all agreed this would maximize our hours of shooting. Well, this proved to be more than true, because every day we would start shooting around 2:00AM, and by 8:00AM horns would be honking and angry commuters would be shouting for us to stop blocking the road. Our crew held tight, except for a few occassions when we found ourselves hold the trafffic police back.....oops.
But the most amazing thing was that we were able to achive a beautiful day look. I won't tell you which scenes were shot in the night...heck, I can't tell day from night myself, after looking at the footage. I can say, however it saved a whole lot of sunburning, and traffic disruptions. Besides having to do all that lighting, and getting up so darn early, shooting night for day is pretty cool stuff.
