A thousand words
09/09/04
If a picture could be worth a thousand words, well, then I think today's blog is already written based on the photo above.
Unless you've done an independent film before, it is really hard to describe the level of intensity, the speed, the stamina, the pace that the entire team must consistantly endure to get to the finish line.
Not quite half way down the road, every day seems like a dizzy obstacle course. For me, I find myself only fucusing on the few inches before me. For many, it is the same. The only thing that guides us is the four year preparation process. Producing cages has meant doing the homework for all the what-if scenarios way in advance. Even that has been less than perfect, but trust me, it has also been a saving grace.
We have a master plan. We have a clear and concise goal. We have a course to which we are prepared and eager to take. We are making this film. We are capturing it. We can only be thankful that we have worked so long and so detailed on the big picture, that now we can just focus on what is immediately in front of us. For me, it is the acting. For the Director of Photography, it is the light and composition. For Art Direction, it is only the images that appear on screen. For Producers, it is getting through the day and keeping the crew healthy.
I could go on and on about how it feels to be in this state of mind...to be running on adrenaline, to be functioning on very little sleep, to be losing weight worrying about the next scene....but I won't. In fact, i don't mind it at all. There is nothing to complain about. I wouldn't trade this journey for anything. I am making the film I sought out to make for the last four years...and the Cages team (cast and crew) have become my family for now.
Someday, I'll be back in America, and I'll reflect fondly on these great but challenging days. I will not see it in the film...as it is all behind the scenes that emotions other than story line lay. I will, however, have photos like the one above. This photo will remind me of the feeling. The dizzy excitement of film making. The rollercoaster of story creation. The spinning vision of collaborative artistry.
Just look at that picture...and I say no more.
