Old Singapore, New Angle.
06/30/04
No clever story angle today. Just the basic time-consuming location scouting exercise that has to be done on any feature film. Every frame, every shot has to be planned, logged and prepared for.
In the story of CAGES, there are multiple opportunities for an international audience to discover the beauty within Singapore. Playing heavily on dynamic range in environments CAGES has to offer, both nostalgic, and modern imagery is used to articulate a full palate in story backdrops. I feel especially passionate about what might normally be "who cares" throw-away location opportunities, especially when I think about the many viewers who will be discovering Singapore for the very first time. In my book, nothing is throw-away.
Hass (Production Manager), Shawn (Location Manager) and Samantha (Art Director) were patient with me all day as I pointed out a bulk of my location ideas. Sometimes I can be quite the foreigner. More than half of them merited a small chuckle from this local crew, because to them, television productions have been shot there a million times. I reminded them, "Sure, to you it's old news, but to a world audience, they will be seeing this for the first time". Still, cliche is not our style and together we discuss, contemplate, and eventually formulate new and original angles for describing the same old spots.
Funny enough, there is a new and energetic passion coming from these otherwise veteran production players. Unlike past projects, these locations are suddenly becoming new discoveries for everyone. Before making a movie that redefines and articulates a beautiful Singapore, we ourselves have to find a new view of Singapore through our own eyes. And I guess, that means looking at life from a new and different angle. Oh. Full circle! There’s my story!
