Life of a Bird Shop owner
08/30/04
Well, finally all the actors are here in Singapore. It was such a great feeling to have just finished a huge portion of the ALI and ETHEN (Kheng Hua and Bobby Tonelli) work and get LIZ (Zelda Rubinstein) and TAN (Mako Iwamatsu).
Both Mako and Zelda are from Hollywood, so I've had a chance to work with them both together in the states, but no matter how much you study and deconstruct a story and character, it pales in comparision to being in the land, and seeing first hand the details of the story.
We spent two full days going over critical scenes, talking, having intellectual conversations about relationship both in our own lives and in the lives of each character. If there is anything I wanted to accomplish during the two days of rehearsal in Singapore before shooting, it was backstory. It is especially important for Mako and Zelda, as this couple has a lot of history.
I spent afternoons taking Mako and Zelda to see the locations we would be shooting in. I can see Mako's mind working...figuring out how it must be to live in the bird shop.
We spent some time with Anthony Teo, the owner of Balestier's bird shop. Anthony has been critical in my development of the story. I even modeled Asrani's character after him losely. (see the story) Mako spent great time studying detail to how to clean cages and open traps. I can see his interest in knowing all there is to know. I am so grateful to have Zelda and Mako as part of the ensemble. Kheng Hua is excited to move forward with the meat of the story. We start shooting in a day.
The challange coming up is that the first few days of their schedule are night shoots. Night shoots are grueling, both physically and emotionally. I hope the entire team, actors and crew can stay focused and find the energy to get through this production challege. Once those four days are done, we can break for one day.. first day off in 12 days...and we can regroup in a more controlled interior day light shoot. Wish us all luck.
Oh, by the way...we are so excited and pleased with all the footage we've shot to date. No compromises anywhere..and in fact, we are more than surprised and delighted by the preformances and look of the story.
Thanks to the magic of the CAGES crew!
keep it going guys!
