Simply Magical!
08/03/04
Being American, and being my age, when you hear the name Samantha, there’s a tendency to associate it with a very well-known television series called “BeWitched!” I remember watching it weekly, during my grammar school years, as the popular television series evolved from black and white to full color. Elizabeth Montgomery played Samantha, the witch. She was beautiful and clever, and with a slight wiggle of her nose, she could work magic.
Well, the years of that television show have faded from my memory, only to return in these last few weeks by a new version of Samantha. Simply referred to as “Sam”, I am once again mesmerized by the magic that this little girl can perform. No wiggle of her nose is needed. Only pure innovation and resourcefulness fuels her magic. She and the entire Art Department have taken what was a crumbling and broken down structure and transformed it into a beautiful and eye-catching set – Hoot Kiam.
Today we had a camera test. It is a humbling feeling to write a story, to fabricate a make believe world and then to have it come alive. Sam has made it come alive. What was once a black and white shell of a building has become a vibrant and colorful location filled with life and character. During the camera test, there were many times when I was in awe of the moment, when I could feel the world of CAGES breathing on its’ own. I felt it was alive. It was magic.
Sam and her crew have been working so much. Sometimes I’m sure it must even feel thankless. But I know that when they see their results they are very proud of their accomplishments. Just today, Sam kept reminding me several times that it wasn’t done yet. And it’s true. There are lots more little lifelike details that she plans to pepper the sets with. And Hook Kiam is just one of the many sets she and her team are working on. Filming starts in less than two weeks, and there’s so much to do. But I just have to say thank you in advance, Sam. What you and the Art Department have done thus far with the locations are nothing short of magical.
