The Final Cue 08/02/04

Graham and I met several times over the past 6 months to talk about the orchestral music for CAGES. It was clear that the most important cue (a "cue" is a piece of music written for a scene in a film) was the final cue where JONAH plays the piano with an orchestra upon returning to his homeland, Singapore.

He wanted the music to sum up JONAH's life in music. In it would be a theme that would finally appeared in full bloom at the end of the film. In it would be a sense of flight, as well as perhaps a sense of being in a cage. As the music appeared over the next month, we were both in tears as the themes and harmonies tugged at our heartstrings, and because of that, we knew we were onto something special.

The music starts with a 3-note theme that we would have already associated with JONAH in earlier scenes. The theme is then repeated an octave higher, and then the orchestra comes in with a gorgeous romantic statement of the theme while Jonah "flies" above the theme with his virtuosi piano playing.

The cue will premier and be recorded live on October 21, 2004 at UCLA, Schoenberg Auditorium at 8 pm with Jon Robertson conducting the 70 piece UCLA Philharmonic. Walter Ponce will perform on piano.
