A Letter From Zelda
07/31/04
Dear Graham,
I’m writing this letter to let you know the many ways I believe I am the right actress to portray LIZ in your beautiful screenplay, CAGES I’m genuinely thrilled and honored that you are permitting me to assay that role.
LIZ and I seem to have had similar compromises to make in our younger years. In my own painful youth, adolescence and young womanhood, I too felt a desperate loneliness and isolation from my peers. My way of dealing with my constant distress and unhappy self-image was to try to make myself more acceptable socially by going into the medical profession as a professional blood banker, useful, yet isolating existence.
Her willingness to accept an assignment in Singapore showed both LIZ’s loyalty to her order, and her personal bravery. The fact that she fell so deeply in love with her late husband, a man from another culture, only adds to her strong passionate nature. I too understand her bravery as you surely realize that I also took the road less traveled, and in mid-life, I emerged as an artist.
As a little person, I dared to stand emotionally naked before the judging swarms of fellow citizens to say loudly and clearly that I am a competitive actress. I will not go away, I will not concede my birthright to be acknowledged as a woman. Like LIZ, I have remained a compassionate soul. We have both known and survived the stings of rejection in our own very personal romantic lives.
I do not feel quite as possessive and proprietary as LIZ, especially in her relationship with TAN. But, her compassion for JONAH is illuminated and she has a vast capacity for forgiveness. LIZ, like myself, is totally woman, and we both use humor to our advantages.
Graham, I will give you the LIZ you so eloquently unveiled, and I am so excited to begin the film.
