Sweet Surrender 07/30/04

Around 1pm we hit the streets in search of a possible location for Ethan’s foyer and staircase, which has been haunting us somehow, in our location hunt. With drizzles and humid clouds hitting us, we stormed our way into Asia Building. No, it not what you think, we weren’t trespassing people, we had the permit to shoot this.

So I watched the boys (Wonderboy and Lappy) having a ball of a time. With their camera toys and lifted spirits, they recorded some sequence of the foyer shots with Graham posing as Ali and running through some staircase and doors towards the ledge. These two lads remind me so much of two high school boys shooting some home made movie after school. There was something so tangible in their spirits that you could feel it. They really want to make it happen. Somehow, with all this humongous skyscrapers and commercial buildings around us, it makes me feel like a super hero in the making, (just like Spidey). Believe me, Wonderboy actually thinks he can scale those walls at Asia Building. Strangely, for some reason, I am picturing these boys as some comic strip heroes. I just love being imaginative.

Wonderboy works wonders on location scouts, he looks into how every element changes his scenes, thus we are in anticipation of his new final script. He gets real dandy thinking of his candy – Club Street. Lappy on the other hand is forever armed with his camera gears and his rave about his new toy – Sun Path, which going to help us track Miss Sunshine at certain hours at any locations. Wicked! As for Mr Farmer, he is just like a daddy watching his kids getting all creative and serious at their “schoolwork”. And where is Uncle Wing? Well, he has officially been christened our Discipline Master! He makes sure we all do our homework! God bless his soul! Bobby, well the brush master blaster, is still working on Monica This dude works magic with only 3 hours to complete one painting! Kang Pow lads!

Ok enough about the boys, now WHERE ARE THE ANGELS??? For now, the female species are too busy to comment because we’re up to our necks, cracking our brain cells, making things as gorgeous as this “dreamers” lads are. We are overwhelmed. In the reign of current male domination, the female power shall once again take the league when the shoot starts. You go girls!

Back to the Asia Building story, Wonderboy has definitely laid his game plans on this set. At the back of our minds, we know that it is almost impossible for any Singaporean to picture an industrial loft set in the midst of the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s too urban living, too out of the Singaporean league of lifestyle. But in the magical world of CAGES, we are making a fairytale Singapore with real life dramas. What can be more breathtaking than a beautiful picture that brings a smile on our faces at the end of the day? I find it unbelievable in a big picture but somehow, it’s inspiring, that we should not judge any book by its’ cover. It’s all about the elements people. What makes CAGES work is the team. And what brings CAGES to the big screen are the elements.

What can I say, we are making a serious mark in this little part of the planet. If we are going to say goodbye to everything in this production it’s not to the memories. Our spirits linger forever in this little town.

Sweet.

Flaps away,
