We are making a movie!
07/28/04
Well I have just passed the one-week mark being here in Singapore. So many things have been going on. Pre-production is working like mad, Graham and our DP Mark Lapwood have been really working hard on establishing their shots and locations, it really is getting exciting.
On the 27th we (Cages) had our first press conference, which was a great success. The turnout was more than we expected and the press loved Kheng (our lead actress) and Dickson (her blind child in the film). And if you are wondering if I attended, the answer is no, for many good reasons. This one was to officially announce the film being made and to also focus on the Singapore side of the cast.
So If you ask what I have been doing this past week, it would be painting and painting. I have about 15 paintings in all that will be showcased on the film as Ethan’s art. I have about three weeks to finish them before shooting starts. The good thing is I can usually complete at least one a day. (thank god!!!)
I have also had the pleasure to meet our lead actress, Tan Kheng Hua, but if you are American you would call her by her first name Kheng. I will be playing opposite her in the film, which I am extremely excited about. She is a beautiful person inside out. Full of energy, wit, and has great depth. She is Ali. There is no question. She has a wonderful family that really compliments her as a person and an actress. It will be exciting to work with her.
Along with meeting Kheng, I have met Dickson as well. To this day it amazes me how we as people take all of our senses for granted. Here is this blind child that has more life than many people I know that can see. What is interesting is that Dickson isn’t completely blind. He sees dark and light, but only when he really gets close up to something. He can read words this way, but also reads Braille, and he also loves to play Othello, which I have just learned the other day. For those that have not played, it is a game that has black and white chips and the over-all object is to have more of your colors on the board in the end than the other person. Well lets just say I got my ass kicked. He loves to play and it shows. But I will beat him before I leave ?
Over all this past week has been a great learning experience. We have a wonderful team and it shows everyday. What we have really started to build is a family. I hope one day again I can work with all of these people. They are true professionals at what they do
