My Boss Rocks!
07/23/04
When I started working with Graham on the 10th of May, I didn’t really know who Alex was. All I knew was that he was in charge of publicity and I would be working directly with him. We usually communicated on the phone and through the internet and every day I would call him to either get new instructions or inform him of my day’s duties. This continued for a week and I felt that it was kind of cold and distant. Partly because of this and partly out of curiosity I’d often wondered how he was like, was he fierce? Serious? Mean? Lenient?
I first met Alex on a Sunday, the 16th of May. When Graham pulled into the driveway, I caught sight of a Mercedes parked right outside the house and as the prospect of meeting him loomed nearer, I started to panic. When we entered the house, he wasn’t there in plain sight… yet. I tired to pull myself together and headed into the office, looking through documents trying to distract myself. Before long Graham came in and told me that Alex would be making his grand appearance soon. True enough, this guy with a hint of Asian ethnicity appeared and with a sincere smile introduced himself. Suddenly all my walls just fell as we began to talk Alex gives out a great warm and comfortable vibe, very charming and very pleasant. He knows how to put you at ease because he just has a way with people and he knows his lines. When it is time to work he just bulldozes ahead and becomes very serious and focused. But when it is break time, you can be sure that fun is coming your way. =)
Despite the amount of time I spent in CAGES, it was only during dim sum days (Sundays) did I then actually get to hang with Alex. Oh the times we bitched about not finding the siew mai and har gao woman, the gushing over the beef entrails and the times we rode in his kick ass of a bass system car. Heck, the day before Graham was to leave for Singapore, instead of picking me up from the hotel and straight to work, both of them took me to Denny’s, my favorite LA breakfast diner! I guess fun is more enjoyable when it’s unexpected.
The last few days in LA, I went to his office to work on some CAGES materials and man, spontaneous must be his middle name! After a day of work it was a mad and blurry mess of car rides, McDonald’s caramel sundaes and then Amoeba (a fantastic and huge music store of first and second hand CDs, LPs, DVDs and more). The very last day that I met up with Alex was the 22nd of June. I met him at night to tie up loose ends for I would be leaving 2 days later. Instead of diving headfirst into some paperwork for CAGES, imagine my delight when he proposed a supper outing instead!! He drove me to this Vietnamese place and it was my first time seeing LA late at night. I quite enjoy the way he does things, a break to recharge and rejuvenate always works the best! He’s fun to hang out with, working or not and the best kind of boss that everyone would give an arm or leg to have.
