Santa Has Arrived! 07/22/04

I know. I know. Me again. This is my last entry for a long time, I promise. It’s 2:00AM, and I’m just finishing up my Thursday. Time is getting to be a precious thing around here. My Director of Photography, Mark Lapwood just flew in and we’re starting the mind-bending journey of shot listing the script.

In order to do this, every scene is being broken down. Every angle, every cut that we anticipate to tell the story is being discussed. Every movement. Every frame. It’s both overwhelming and thrilling at the same time.

Mark takes notes. I scribble stick figures. Together we find the common vision. Mark tends to be super innovative, I tend to stay grounded. He pushes me into areas I wouldn’t have ventured into on my own. I keep him from wandering too far. We’re creating a language that grounds its foundation on how our brains think alike. On set, it will be a collaborative vision that will allow us to tell a feature length story with clarity and grace.

And this is done with a constant narration on my end of how music and sound come into play. I have the entire story in my head. Mark will translate it visually. Sound design will intensify Mark’s picture. Underscore and Score by Roger Bourland will create a second dimension to the entire experience. Frank Cody, music supervisor and Soundtrack Producer from Rendezvous Music will add yet additional layers to an already compelling work. Mark has asked to have the music in his head when he shoots the visuals. I like the way he thinks.

Our Gaffer, and his many lighting toys arrived today. Mark was like a little boy on a Christmas morning… Yes, Santa has arrived! All the little toys a DP could ever want were jam packed into this truck. Mark was so excited!

We’ve been working for two days now. Between interruptions and other meetings that demand our focus on technical or business aspects of filmmaking, we are making slow but sound artistic progress on the picture. We finished today at scene 30. And we have another 171 scenes to go.
