Everyone Has A Reason…
07/19/04
Everyone has a reason to be in this project. For Singapore fashion designer Francis Ler, there is no exception. Somehow, someway, we are all motivated by the story enough to spend our precious and scarce time in effort to tell the story. It never ceases to amaze me how and why people connect to CAGES. Regardless of the reason, I am always grateful.
Francis Ler is a brilliant high-end artist who embellishes in the beauty of Asian fabrics and shapes in order to enhance the beauty of the human figure. His imaginative expression is a hybrid of classic and modern elements. He is a free-spirited eclectic master of design that when putting old and new together miraculously conjures a vivid and elegant palette fit for a star.
But CAGES poses a challenge. Suddenly, a man who has been dressing up a woman now has to dress her down. Eager to take the challenge, Francis found his inspiration by understanding the spine of the story. He knows that clothing sends a message. Color, cuts, lines, weave, layers, all play into a psyche. As we move through a difficult and emotional journey such as CAGES, working closely with our wardrobe department has allowed Francis to come up with an eloquent orchestration of garments that helps tell the story on one more level. Each article of clothing, tailor made, and originally designed will enhance the emotional thread of Singapore actress Tan Kheng Hua, as her character (ALI) navigates through the story. With a detailed knowledge of the action in every scene, the environment surrounding her at all times, and the impact of her emotional past, present and future, a strategic and deliberate collection is formulated.
What really draws Ler to the project is his connection with ALI. In a sense, ALI struggles in life to find a sense of connection with her past. Francis admits he’s doing the same thing with his art, as he struggles to find an identity by using traditional fabrics in modern context.
We are who we are. Our past will always be a part of ourselves. We must eventually face it, embrace it, and let it empower our selves. It is this kind of connection in story that allows great artists such as Francis to bless the film with his radiant artistry.
