Dress Me Up Baby!
07/17/04
It’s production time for the wardrobe department! Finally we have nailed down the looks for the cast and this week was mostly spent on collecting outfits from sponsors, buying fabric and tailoring. And of course, working with the fashion designer for ALI’s wardrobe. I can’t wait to see the sketches next week!
Working on CAGES has been a unique experience for me. The movie, with it’s powerful storyline, centers around the lives of common people. As far as wardrobe is concerned, basic is the way to go for most of the cast. It may sound simple, but to create a look to define a character through the simplest looking clothing can sometimes become a challenge. This, I refer to the characters of TAN and JONAH. The two not only have to be dressed down to the basics, they have to somehow look alike (despite their age difference). I spent many hours at wet markets and Chinatown observing Ah Pehs (old men) and Di Di (little boys) just to get the right feel… although I’d much prefer to be at Orchard Road looking at men around my age! LOL!
Dressing up LIZ is perhaps the most enjoyable task of all. Her 1970s-inspired dress sense gives me the opportunity to explore the 70s’ fashion. I had a great time digging into a relative’s closet, pulling out her entire vintage collection for reference. And in the midst of sourcing for fabric, I stumbled across a shop that sells authentic 1970s’ sunglasses! Teresa and I bought quite a few pairs and I’m sure we’ll be going back again! Right Teresa???
Working on a film can be fun, but it is also no easy task. What keeps me going is TEAM SPIRIT. Needless to say, the CAGES team is full of it. Yeah! Although we have different departments, everyone is ever ready to help. Take ETHAN’s place for example, the whole office was mobilized to clear up an apartment for the setup. Guess what, everyone turned up! (Clap, clap, clap.) So guys when I need help to transport the clothes, I know you all will always be there for me!!!!!!
The next few weeks will probably involve a lot of fine-tuning to the wardrobe. And then, the camera will roll. Whatever it may be, like the rest of my colleagues, I’ll give my best shot!
