Face to Face 08/07/04

Back in mid May, when Graham first approached URGE to discuss the CAGES website, we met at a local Mexican restaurant to review the project and brainstorm together. Sitting at a table in the corner, between burrito bites, we envisioned an actively growing site and sketched site structure on napkins. As we wrapped up our initial meeting, Graham mentioned he would be with the production team in Singapore while we developed the site here in Los Angeles. No big deal, right?

Thanks to high-speed internet connections and iChat, our trans-pacific collaboration has been excellent. During production we've exchanged ideas, images and materials using email, voice chat, and occasionally using video chat—face to face again, minus the burritos, sitting across an oceanic table. I know people have been working on these technologies for decades, and that we're not the first team to use technology to span great distances. Even so, I feel as though we've reached a major milestone. I'm truly inspired by technology's ability to bring people closer and facilitate the creative process.

The time difference has worked out really well. We in LA like to work late, and Singapore likes to get up early. They work even later and so each morning and evening, we connect to review the site, exchange ideas and pass the baton. While Singapore sleeps, we develop and update, and while we sleep, they test and collect feedback. This non-stop cycle has brought great efficiency to the work and has supported our desire to continually enhance the site and it's functionality.

As both developer and visitor of CagesMovie.com, it is this Behind the Scenes section that has been most inspiring. For website visitors outside of Singapore, it is a window into different worlds—into Singapore and it's beauty and history—into the inspiring world of independent movie-making. And for the cast and crew of CAGES, this Behind the Scenes journal (and sometimes diary) has helped unite and inspire the team. And for me, inspiring many late nights of design and coding, and many more to come.
