CAGES IS OFFICIAL SELECTION IN PUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL!
09/06/05
First time American Director, Graham Streeter, gains recognition from the international film industry for the movie CAGES. CAGES, written and directed by Streeter, is a small-budget US/Singapore independent film invited to premiere at the PUSAN International Film Festival (PIFF) 2005.
The Pusan International Film Festival is regarded as one of the top five international film festivals around the world. Last year, the event saw a prolific screening of 266 films from 63 countries, including 58 from Korea, 102 from other parts of Asia and 106 from the rest of the world.
As part of its 10th Anniversary celebrations, PIFF commemorates the significance of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) with a special screening of 20 films; one representative of each APEC nation. These films have been chosen for their unique ability to display not only APEC’s agenda of deepening cultural exchange among its nations, but to also adequately reflect the traditions and values of the country they represent. Streeter’s film CAGES, was selected to represent Singapore in this category.
Streeter was inspired to write the story of CAGES after attending a songbird gathering at the Tiong Bahru area of Singapore during his first visit in 2000. He soon met Dickson Tan, a visually impaired boy at the Singapore School for the Blind, who was eventually cast to play the part of Jonah in the film. Four years of development later, CAGES finally took flight.
Shot entirely in Singapore, CAGES is a story about a single mother who reunites with her father who abandoned her over 20 years ago, and how her 7 year-old blind son shows them the meaning of love. CAGES draws an eloquent portrait of the often-complex family structure, a product of culture and tradition, still existing strong among Asian people living in modern-day Singapore.
The movie’s multi-cultural cast consists of Oscar Nominee Makoto Iwamatsu (Sand Pebbles, Pearl Harbor), Zelda Rubinstein (Poltergeist), along with award winning Singaporean actress, Tan Kheng Hua, and introducing visually impaired Dickson Tan.
The film is produced by Singapore filmmaker Tania Sng and her company, Aquafire Productions, and shot on a budget of US$500k. It was captured digitally by award-winning cinematographer Mark Lapwood, and transferred to 35mm film.
