Back on the Project… But this time in Singapore
07/03/04
It was going to be a short bus ride from my home to the set, which is at Siglap. As I boarded the Number 12 bus, a sense of reminiscence swept through me. Today is exactly a week since we came back from Los Angeles, the place where we started our journey on CAGES and today we would officially start work on it again, this time in Singapore.
I arrived at about 10 am and the moment I stepped into the set/house, I was kinda awestruck. Honestly, I have never seen such a house with so much space before in Singapore. After a nice breakfast offered by Tania’s parents, my fellow interns and the rest of the crew came. Tania, the Executive Producer, briefly told us what would be happening today, which is the clearing of the living room and Samantha, the Art Director, started to explain how Ethan’s pad would be like. I could almost imagine and picture the end result in my mind. Dark red curtain-like drapes, canvases here and there, the queen size bed beside a huge balcony overlooking the street, I was seriously intrigued.
After a brief round of hellos, we got down to work. We started clearing out the heavy tables and chairs, then the boxes one by one. Lily had asked us to leave them in the darkroom upstairs and it was not much of a hassle except that we had to watch out for a very grumpy old cat’s tail, lest we incurred it’s wrath. Kiwi, I think was its name. Like a sly military commander in chief watching it’s troops, he sat there observing as we struggled to move the trickier stuff up – sofas, tables, chairs, huge paintings and more boxes. Then came the glass table and the television set, two very dangerous items. However, things went well – as they usually do when executed them in a ‘the item is more precious then me’ manner. I also realized that helping one another in such situations is also a great way to break the ice. We got to know the crew’s names and a little of their background.
Soon, most of the stuff has been cleared and bottles of water were passed around. It was very gratifying to see the huge empty space, a privilege for indoors cum on location shoots. During lunch we got to chat with some of our colleagues and it wasn’t too long before it was time to part.
It has really been a good experience and I cannot wait for the next time we will get to work on CAGES again.
